Teaching Experience

Assistant Dean, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts Division
Assistant Professor of Art/Ceramics

Northern Virginia Community College, Alexandria, Virginia           1983 – present
Teach all levels of ceramics, drawing and design. Established ceramics program at the Alexandria Campus in 1987, and have taught ceramics primarily since 1989. I am the only full-time ceramics teacher at NVCC. The current ceramics studio accommodates up to 60 students per semester. Maintain a healthy and safe ceramic studio environment as a priority and practices that promote cleanliness and respect for the equipment are stressed. Students are encouraged to explore functional and non-functional forms, traditional and non-traditional surface treatments and the variety of firing options available to them. Have raised funds and purchased a large gas fired kiln through grants, solicitations and student pottery benefits.

Adjunct Instructor

Germanna Community College, Fredericksburg, Virginia              2004 - 2006
Teach beginning level ceramics. Establish ceramics program for Germanna CC, to serve as a fine art elective for degree seeking students and personal enrichment for the community.

Adjunct Professorial Lecturer

The George Washington University, Washington, D.C.                 Fall 1988
Taught a class in beginning wheel throwing as an elective course for degree seeking art students. Stressed basic skill building exercises to establish a solid foundation for further study.

Instructor of Art

Northern Virginia Community College, Manassas, Virginia            1977 – 1983
Taught all levels of ceramics, drawing and design. Started the ceramics program with 4 wheels and a small electric kiln in a single studio that was shared with all other art courses. Prior to closing, due to budget reductions, the ceramics program had grown to 3 electric kilns, a 12 cu. ft. gas kiln, 6 wheels and a separate studio dedicated to the discipline.

Ceramics Instructor

The Art League, Alexandria, Virginia                                   1977
Taught class in beginning and intermediate wheel throwing for a non-credit community based arts organization. Concentrated on helping individuals achieve goals and objectives according to starting levels of skill.

Research Interest

Though traditionally produced at cone 10, I have discovered very satisfactory results with crystalline glaze formulas fired at cone 6. My research in this area started as a result of the kilns at school not firing to cone 10 quickly enough to allow time for necessary temperature holds to grow the crystals. I experimented with existing cone 10 recipes by adding increments of low temperature fluxes until I found a few newly formulated glazes that produced consistent results. I’ve continued this area of research, concentrating on glaze formulas using various commercial frits as the primary flux. The results of this research will provide studio ceramicists and schools with limited firing capabilities the opportunity to explore crystalline glazes.
